timo-hornLiverpool have been handed a massive setback in their ongoing pursuit of signing a goalkeeper after FC Koln stopper Timo Horn put the recent speculations linking him with a move to Anfield to bed.

The German U21 international has been the standout player for the Bundesliga outfit after coming up through the ranks of the club’s youth setup. He made it to the club’s first team in 2011.

The Daily Mirror reported that Brendan Rodgers is planning to Horn as a replacement for struggling Simon Mignolet. The 21-year-old’s contract at Koln runs down in 2016 and is now looking to sign a new deal with his current employers.

“I have said it more than once: I am in talks with FC Koln [regarding a new contract]. I want to sign on with my club,” Horn told Cologne-based Express 1 newspaper.

Meanwhile, Horn’s agent, Volker Struth has denied the recent reports linking his client with a move to the Premier League.

“We have been told about those rumours. However, no one contacted us directly,” Horn’s agent stressed.

Liverpool have struggled in all competitions this season as they were knocked out of the Champions League after their latest 1-1 draw at Anfield against Basel. The Reds will now feature in the Europa League after finishing third in the group table.

Mignolet has struggled this season and the former Swansea manager allowed Pepe Reina join Bayern Munich earlier in the summer. Rodgers failed to add depth to the squad in the goalkeeping position and Liverpool are in the market for a goalkeeper to challenge the Belgium international for a place in the starting XI.
