Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has left out captain, Wayne Rooney from their Champions League squad against PSV.

Van Gaal confirmed that the England striker tweaked his hamstrings in the training and will be left out as a precaution.

Van Gaal said: “I don’t want to take any risks with our captain.

“He is much too important for our team.

“So I don’t think he will play against PSV.

“It is a minor injury and I believe that he shall play against Southampton.”

Rooney missed the derby against Liverpool and will now miss United’s Champions League showdown against PSV.

The England star scored twice during the international break and became the all time top scorer for his country. Rooney will be bitterly disappointed about missing two important games back to back.

After his England exploits, the Manchester United star would have hoped to carry on his goalscoring form with his club.

Meanwhile, Memphis Depay will be buzzing about the prospect of facing his former club and will be eager to show them what they are missing this season.

Manchester United squad against PSV: David De Gea, Sergio Romero; Daley Blind, Matteo Darmian, Paddy McNair, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling, Antonio Valencia; Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Andreas Pereira, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Juan Mata, Ashley Young; Memphis Depay, Marouane Fellaini, Anthony Martial, James Wilson.
