Manchester United winger, Memphis Depay has been likened to the notorious James Bond villain, Goldfinger, by the Dutch footballing legend, Van Hanegem.
Van Hanegem, considered as one of Holland’s finest players, claimed that Memphis Depay is extremely conscious about his fashion and that there was no use for that on the pitch.
Depay arrived on international duty, sporting a hat and a scarf. However, what left Hanegem unimpressed was the choice of boots from the Manchester United attacker.
The former PSV star was wearing golden boots, which brought out the comparisons with Auric Goldfinger.
“There are a few players at Oranje that only think about themselves”, he said.
“Take Memphis for instance. He’s just like Goldfinger with his golden shoes. But what is the use of that for Netherlands?”
“I don’t care that he comes to Oranje with a hat and a scarf.
“What he does outside of the pitch is his own business. But with a couple of suspenders and a beard, he could easily join the Amish people in America and sit on a wagon.”
Depay will not be pleased to hear these comments about his fashion sense. Furthermore, Holland’s decline has nothing to do with Depay being self-absorbed.
The young attacker joined Manchester United from PSV this summer and has already made his mark in the Champions League, scoring two amazing goals at Old Trafford.
