Michael Carrick Injury: The 33-year-old was withdrawn from the England squad after he had suffered a groin injury in training. It is indeed a fresh blow for the stylish midfielder to re-establish himself in the international arena once again.
More than anything else, his injury will cause concern at Old Trafford, as he recently returned to the United squad after recovering a serious ankle injury he suffered during the pre-season.
The Manchester United midfielder has won only 31 caps for England since he made debut in 2001, and was in contention for a return to the starting line-up in Saturday’s Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Slovenia.
Oliver Kay of The Times writes “he (Carrick) told reporters on Tuesday of his excitement at the unexpected possibility of a new start after the international retirements of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.”
An FA statement said that the injury was minor, and United fans can only hope that Carrick recovers at the earliest.
Louis van Gaal is facing a deep injury crisis at the moment, with several first team players Rafael Da Silva, Phil Jones, Jonny Evans, Radamel Falcao are struggling to regain full fitness. And now Carrick joins the long list and is doubtful whether he’ll be fit for their next Barclays Premier League match away to Arsenal a week on Saturday.
