Manchester United had been linked with several central midfielders in the summer. While most of the transfer rumour whirligig centred around Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, United had been linked with other good central midfielders as well who were touted as potential alternatives.
One of them is William Carvalho. The highly talented Portuguese midfielder had been a reported target of Manchester United and if the reports are to be believed Sporting Lisbon rejected an offer from both United and Arsenal on the transfer deadline day for the midfielder.
However, he is not the one whom the article is about. Manchester United were also linked with a move for Monaco midfielder Joao Moutinho.
The French club sold Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez to Manchester United and Real Madrid respectively in the summer and were thought to be bracing themselves on losing their star midfielder.
Moutinho has responded to those rumours recently where he said: “Manchester United? There was nothing. To my knowledge, there was nothing.”
Moutinho now faces an onerous task of keeping Monaco competitive in the league, having see two of the club’s best players leave in the summer.
