Germany beat Argentina 1-0 in the Maracana on Sunday evening to win their fourth World Cup, with substitute Mario Gotze scoring a breathtaking goal in extra-time to secure the trophy.
With only seven minutes left to play of extra-time in what was an excellent final in Rio, the Bayern Munich man controlled Andre Schurrle’s inch-perfect cross into the box before steering the ball past the helpless Sergio Romero in the Argentina goal, sending Germans all around the world euphoric.
It was the 22-year-old’s first goal in the tournament, and it will be one that both he and the entire German nation remembers for a very long time. Argentina, meanwhile, will be hard pressed to ever remove the image of the diminutive attacker wheeling away in delight, with a screaming Muller in hot pursuit, while the Maracana rocked under the cacophony from elated German fans.
