Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wants his side to remain within top six around Christmas, before making incursions in the winter transfer window to further bolster the squad and give necessary ammunition for a top-four fight till the end of the season.
The Reds have made a good start to the season, winning three back-to-back league games but have seen the results gone against them in the last couple of games, where they suffered a draw and a defeat against Swansea and Southampton respectively.
Liverpool are just two points behind league leaders Arsenal and Rodgers expects his team to concentrate fully on the league, especially now they are out of League Cup competition, following their defeat on Wednesday at the hands of arch-rivals Manchester United.
Rodgers feels that lack of cup distraction will help them to focus strongly in the league, allowing them to maintain a good-run till New Year, before new faces can be drafted in.
Speaking to Sky Sports he said:
“Now we can only concentrate on the league up until Christmas. So we have to make sure we stay up in that top six in the league and keep fighting and hopefully we can reinforce in January.
“I think the players have made an excellent start. We were flat and subdued at the weekend (against Southampton) and we couldn’t get going – part of that was because of the players we had available.”
Liverpool will be looking to get back to winning ways when they face Sunderland this Sunday at the Stadium of Light. The Reds will be hoping to earn full three points against the manager-less Black Cats that are languishing at the bottom of the table, without registering a single victory so far.
Simon Mignolet will play against his former club for the first time since joining the Reds in the summer. The Belgian goal-keeper is hopeful of a positive result on Sunday and wants his team to earn nothing less than full three points.
