Manchester United host Arsenal on Monday night with both teams jostling for position at the top of the Premier League table. Arsenal are more confident than usual this season, with all the talk from the Gunners’ camp about how the boys have ‘grown up into men’. It’s far more respectful than Evra’s boast about how United could lose to Arsenal and still win the league – although in Evra’s defence his PR strategy has always been to try and say what Manchester United fans at large think, and in that respect he is right – most United fans will feel that Arsenal, despite their table-topping form, will not last the whole season at the top.
Back in 2008, Nasri scored twice to hand Arsenal a 2-1 win (Rafael scoring the consolation goal for United). Nasri has had a fantastic start to the 2010/2011 season and will take some stopping, while Nani, scorer of THAT goal against Arsenal last season, will be United’s main threat.
The clubs are even disagreeing on fashion accessories now, with Fergie saying that ‘real men don’t wear snoods’ and Wenger countering by saying that his players wear them based on ‘medical advice’. It may not be strictly boys v men, and Wenger may be prone to covering for his players’ weaknesses, but with Arsenal’s attack in fine form and United’s defence stuttering, it’s difficult to see how United could stop Arsenal based on this season’s form.
Unless they pull a Fergie, defy the formbook and odds again and jump over Arsenal to top the table with a game away to Blackpool still in hand. Having seen United do that so often before, and having seen Arsenal fall at the final hurdle in the last few seasons, you wouldn’t bet against United yet.
Unless, of course, you are a snood fan, in which case you have bigger things to worry about.
