Manchester United have reportedly identified the Sporting midfielder William Carvalho as a January transfer target.

Jose Mourinho is thought to be an admirer of the Portuguese defensive midfielder and Caliomercato are claiming that the Premier League giants will make their move for Carvalho when the January transfer window opens.

The 24-year-old Sporting midfielder had a very good tournament in France this summer and helped his country win the Euro 2016. The tough tackling midfielder averaged 2.6 tackles and 2.8 clearances per game during the Euros. He also managed to rack up 1.4 interceptions.

Carvalho is a defensive midfielder who specialises in his reading of the game and breaking up of the play. In addition to his defensive qualities, Carvalho is a very accomplished passer as well.

The Portugal international had a pass accuracy of 89.5% during his 5 appearances in the Euros and averaged 70 passes per game.

Manchester United lack a strong defensive midfielder in the middle of the park and if the report from Calciomercato is true, Carvalho could be an excellent addition for the Red Devils.

The player has been linked with other Premier League clubs in the past, but United are one of the best clubs in the world and if they are determined to land the player, they are likely to get him.

The Portuguese midfielder could lay the foundations of a successful midfield alongside Paul Pogba for years to come.

The likes of Carrick, Fellaini and Herrera offer their unique set of qualities in the midfield, but none can match Carvalho’s combination of defensive contribution, physical attributes and tactical intelligence.

For tough away games in Europe as well as the league, a player like him could make all the difference for Jose Mourinho.

Carvalho has made 4 appearances for Sporting so far this season and has already picked up one man of the match award against bitter rivals Porto.
