World record signing Paul Pogba has faced a lot of criticism since his move to Manchester United.
United’s decision to spend £89 million on the player has automatically increased expectations of the fans as well as neutrals and the French midfielder has struggled at times this season. However, club captain Wayne Rooney has no doubts that the “fantastic” central midfielder will shine in the Premier League.
Paul Pogba has impressed in patches so far and will need to find some sort of consistency if he wants to justify his outrageous price tag. Furthermore, he will also need help from his teammates and manager.
The midfielder struggled to influence the game against Liverpool and was left isolated for most parts. Although the player needs to do well on that front, Pogba’s ineffective performance was partially down to the tactics as well.
At times this season, Mourinho‘s restricted style of play has affected Pogba as he prefers to play with more licence and in a more creative role. Paul Pogba has scored once this season and has created the most number of chances for his team in the Premier League with 12.
His tendency to operate in a more aggressive role is also evident from his passing stats. The midfielder has completed 378 passes in the league this season with a pass accuracy of 83%, of which 81% were forward passes.
Rooney believes Pogba will adjust with time and show his true quality soon enough. His performances for Juventus clearly show that the talent is there. Once he adapts to life in England, there is no reason to believe why he cannot replicate his Serie A heroics in the Premier League.
Paul is a fantastic player. I think he is working hard, and he is doing well. It is a different league to what he’s been used to – he didn’t really play last time when he was here, so this is all new. He is a fantastic player, and he will shine for us this season – of that there is no doubt.
In other news, the Old Trafford outfit have confirmed that on-loan striker James Wilson has picked up a knee injury with Derby. Wilson has returned to the club for an assessment after sustaining the injury during a training session on Monday.
The 20-year-old striker joined Derby County on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window and has made three starts for them so far. Wilson scored in the Checkatrade Trophy draw with Doncaster Rovers earlier this month.
