Manchester City have made a formal approach to sign West Ham’s highly rated teenage star Reece Oxford.

According to reports from the Telegraph, City have made contact on Monday night for the 17-year-old who is also wanted by a host of Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool.

City’s scouts have been watching the West Ham youngster during the recent Under 19 European Championships and probably are impressed with his performances so far.

Back in December last year, The Times reported that Manchester United were preparing an “audacious bid” for the youngster. United were planning to submit an initial bid around £8m and would return again with a better offer if it was rejected. I wrote back in December of United’s long-term interest in the youngster:

It is not the first time United have shown an interest in the youngster. The Red Devils reportedly tried to sign the England youth international last season, but the youngster wasn’t ready to leave West Ham as he was certain of getting regular first team chances at Upton Park.

Oxford has only two years remaining on his current West Ham contract but the club rates him highly and would try their best to keep him at the club.

Earlier in the summer, the Hammers had rejected a £10m bid from Bundesliga’s Red Bull Leipzig, so City need to come up with a better offer to make the move happen.

Oxford became the youngster ever player in the club’s history last August and the second youngest Premier League starter in history when at the age of 16 he made his debut in the Premier League in a 2-0 victory over Arsenal.

It remains to be seen whether West Ham cash in on their most promising talents or offer him a lucrative contract in the coming days to fend off interest from top Premier League clubs.
