Liverpool are closing in on a move for the 26 year old Porto midfielder Hector Herrera.

The Porto midfielder is a target for Italian giants Napoli as well, but it seems that the Reds have stolen a march on their rivals for the signature of the Mexican.

Jurgen Klopp wants to sign Herrera as a partner for German midfielder Emre Can. Liverpool have struggled in the midfield with the likes of Henderson and Milner. Both English players are more comfortable in a three man midfield, but Klopp seems to prefer a two man midfield.

Herrera has the positional understanding and tactical knowledge to play in a midfield two. He would also add more defensive steel to Liverpool’s midfield.

Recent reports claim that Liverpool have already agreed terms with the player and Pachuca ( who own 30% of the player).

The Reds have been scouting Herrera since 2012 and the Mexican was close to an Anfield move back then. Back then, the player admitted to meeting a Liverpool scout and Pachuca’s director also confirmed that Liverpool have first option on the player.

Herrera told reporters (in 2012): “I was only introduced to him, he didn’t tell me anything specific.”

Andres Fassi, Pachuca’s executive director said (in 2012) : “We have a sort of deal between the two clubs, in that Liverpool would be the first in line should the player emigrate to Europe. There’s no formal offer yet, only interest, no verbal agreement or pre-contract.”

A move failed to materialise back then, but Klopp is keen on signing the Mexican now and if latest reports are to be believed, then a deal is really close.
