Eintracht Frankfurt defender Jetro Willems has revealed that he is keen on returning to Newcastle United.
The 27-year-old had a loan spell with the Premier League club during the 2019/20 season, which was cut short due to injury.
The Dutchman is open to heading back to St James’ Park and feels that he has unfinished business at the club.
Speaking to the Chronicle, he said: “I left because I wanted something new. I had a great time at Newcastle, and I want something else.
“I had a good time in Germany and won some titles and some nice things, but I wanted something else.
“Of course, Newcastle is a very nice option for me. I was there for a long time – like, half a year – and I was enjoying the moment there.
“It’s a great option and it’s a club which knows me – I know them. It would be great to join them.”
Willems established himself as a key player during his first spell with the club and has formed a bond with the fans.
He has revealed that he watches every Newcastle game and has a great friendship with Allan Saint-Maximin.
The two players formed a quality partnership during their time together at Newcastle.
The Magpies could certainly use more depth in the left-back area, and the free signing of Willems could prove to be a smart decision.
However, he has not played for nearly 15 months, and there is no guarantee that he will regain his sharpness and form.
The Magpies already have an exciting young prospect in Jamal Lewis, and Willems could be a useful short term option.
He would be a low-risk signing for the Magpies, although his addition to the ranks could impact Lewis’ development.
