Reports in this morning’s Daily Telegraph are suggesting that Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher may be poised to make a shock return to the England squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Carragher declared his retirement from international football in the summer of 2007 (due to his frustration at the lack of opportunities handed to him by Steve McClaren) but has now indicated a willingness to reverse his decision following a series of secret meetings held with the current England management team.
Although talks are thought to be at a delicate stage (Carragher is said to be wary of a supporter’s backlash) it is thought that Fabio Capello now intends to select the 32-year-old in his 30 man provisional World Cup squad, which is set to be announced at Wembley this coming Tuesday.
