Manchester United striker, Anthony Martial, was expected to take his game to another level this season.
The French international had an impressive first season at Old Trafford, but things have not gone according to play for him under the tutelage of José Mourinho. The Portuguese manager has not been impressed with the player and has dropped him more often than not, so far.
The arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimović has restricted Martial’s role in the starting lineup. The former Monaco striker has been played out wide most of time in order to accommodate the Swedish superstar. Change of position and philosophy under a new manager has not helped the young forward, and he has struggled to replicate his form from last season. Additionally, Ibrahimović’s good form has not made his job any easier.
Speaking to the media, Martial revealed that he is very annoyed with Mourinho’s decision to bench him. However, he seems to be taking the situation in a positive way and is treating it as a challenge that he will need to overcome.
It’s annoying, it’s really annoying, but it’s a challenge you have to overcome, and that’s how you progress. It’s hard. All you want to do is try and help your team, and when you’re on the bench, you can’t. In the end, these are choices, and you have to accept them.
It will be interesting to see how Mourinho takes to these comments. It is completely understandable why Martial is annoyed. He is one of the brightest young forwards in Europe right now and needs to play regularly in order to develop.
Furthermore, Mourinho should be able to find a system that accommodates Martial, along with his new signings. Manchester United simply cannot afford to waste a talent like that in order to make way for a 35-year-old player who is nearing the end of his career.
