Queens Park Rangers centre-back Rio Ferdinand has been handed a three-match ban and a £25,000 fine from the FA for comments he made on Twitter.
The former Manchester United and England captain has been punished for using the word ‘sket’ on his account. The definition of the term is “a promiscuous girl or woman”.
Rio Ferdinand has also been “severely warned as to his future conduct” and been asked to attend an education programme run by the FA.
The 35-year old is an active user of Twitter and has nearly 6 million followers on his account, @rioferdy5.
Ferdinand was left out of the QPR side on Monday as the West London side recorded only their second win of the season, by beating Aston Villa 2-0 at Loftus Road.
The seasoned campaigner has come under some criticism of late and reports last week suggested he may be moved on as early as January, having only joined the club on a free transfer from Manchester United in the summer.
QPR face their local rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and will be without their experienced centre-back for the first of three matches, unless the club appeal Ferdinand’s ban.
