Louis van Gaal said in his first press conference that he will take a closer look on the players he have at disposal and then would delve into the transfer market if necessary. That is however not applicable when it comes to defence and it is one of the major areas that United badly need reinforcement, and that too immediately.
Having sold Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand already, United not only need to add bodies to cover the central defensive spots, but at the same time need to find world class players to fill the void left by the club legends.
According to reports from Catalan newspaper Sport, Manchester United have almost reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels and the deal could be completed within this week only.
The German defender is arguably one of the best in the world at the moment and would cost around €20m, or slightly more than that.
Sport covered the news from Barcelona’s angle. Hummels was a reported target of Barcelona as they looked to find a long term replacement of Puyol, but the Catalan club have shifted their attention elsewhere, with players like Marquinhos and Vertonghen are being considered now.
The report claim an agreement between both clubs is about to be reached and the transfer should be announced during this week. Well, English media have also suggested earlier that Manchester United consider Hummels as the perfect fit to fill the void left by Vidic and Ferdinand, but let’s not get too carried away at the moment, as it has been covered by the Catalan press and not emanates from Manchester camp or from Germany. We will keep you informed with all latest developments on this saga.
