Former Premier League manager Alex McLeish believes Matheus Pereira would be a great acquisition for Leeds United during this summer’s transfer window.

The Brazilian stood out for West Bromwich Albion on their return to the top-flight last term, registering 11 goals and six assists from 33 league appearances.

Despite his impressive showing, the Midlands outfit were relegated without much of a fight as they finished 13 points adrift of safety.

Pereira is keen on staying in the Premier League, and Leeds are reportedly one of the clubs interested in securing his signature this summer.

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish said that the 25-year-old would be a great signing for Leeds and an ideal successor to Pablo Hernandez.

He said: “Absolutely brilliant. A very technical player, and I think it would be a great acquisition that I can see happening.

“You would think he would be very much available due to the fact West Brom are in the Championship now.

“Nobody wants to be likened to somebody else. You want to be your own man. Pablo has had a fantastic career, but he is getting to an age where the legs are affected a wee bit.

“It is right you get a new pretender. A new kid on the block continuing the marvellous work he has done. Also, adding to Leeds’ terrific entertainment levels.”

Hernandez was used sparingly after Leeds’ promotion to the top-flight last term. He registered just one goal and two assists from 20 appearances.

The Spaniard has been released by the Yorkshire outfit, and the focus will be on bolstering the attack further after finishing ninth last season.

The Whites are likely to sign Jack Harrison permanently from Manchester City after three successive seasons on loan with the club.

They also have another quality winger in Raphinha in their ranks, and the duo established themselves on the flanks last season.

However, there is room for improvement in the attacking midfield role, and Pereira would be an ideal fit for the club’s style of play.

Club-record signing Rodrigo showed plenty of promise in the final weeks of last season, but the club needs more competition for places.

Pereira won’t come on the cheap with the Baggies said to value him at £30 million.
