Chile 1-2 Spain
2010 FIFA World Cup
25 June 2010
Spain would get two first half goals and hang onto their lead as they won Group H and advanced to the next round. Chile also advanced despite the loss as Switzerland were held to a draw with Honduras.
Spain would take the lead in the 24th minute with a David Villa goal and extend it to 2-0 with a Andres Iniesta goal in the 37th minute. Chile’s chances of a comeback took a hit right after the goal as Marco Estrade was given a red card (second yellow).
Chile did start off with energy in the second half and cut the lead in half with a Rodrigo Millar goal in the 47th minute. That’s as close as they would get as Spain held on for the victory.
Both teams played very conservatively at the end of the match which made for a very boring final 10-15 minutes. Spain will now play Portugal in the round of 16 while Chile faces Brazil in the round of 16.
