Germany v Serbia
Group D, 2010 World Cup
Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, Port Elizabeth
Friday, 18 June 2010
Kickoff: 16:30 Local
Germany’s win over Australia briefly catapulted them into the favourites slot, and while their squad always had the quality, it’s worth noting that their win came against a team shorn of striking ability and defensively stale, while the scoreline was flattered by their best player being sent off.
Not too different then, from Argentina’s 4-1 win over South Korea, where the losing side played far better than the result suggested and the winners were helped by the profligacy of their strikers.
The World Cup may be seeing fewer goals but it’s not because of better defending, it’s more a case of teams not being as efficient in front of goal as before. Still, with everyone having played at least a game, there’s no room left for using rustiness as an excuse.
Serbia go into this match knowing that they need to win, but have the players to hold off Germany’s forward line and with their players having extensive experience in European leagues (especially Bundesliga), their players will know how to best counter Germany’s strengths.
Serbia need at least a point from this game and will be hoping that Australia can nick points off Ghana, otherwise it’ll be curtains for them at this World Cup. Germany, on the other hand, know that a victory will secure qualification and put them in the second round alongside the likes of Mexico and Argentina.
