It would appear that England centre-back John Terry has suffered the same fate that befell Wayne Rooney, Ledley King and David Beckham before him, after seeing a suspected broken metatarsal – sustained during a Chelsea training session earlier today – leaving him on the verge of having to pull out of Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad.
Chelsea have confirmed that Terry is currently undergoing ‘precautionary scans’ to determine the severity of the injury (with results expected to be returned on Thursday) after leaving their Cobham training complex in a protective boot, but it is thought that – should the results confirm a fracture – the 29-year-old defender will almost certainly be sidelined for at least six to eight weeks – ruling him out of the World Cup in South Africa.
Terry will also miss Chelsea’s upcoming FA Cup final clash against Portsmouth at Wembley this coming Saturday (15th May).
Whilst England have a clutch of highly-competent central-defensive deputies, the probable withdrawal of John Terry from the squad can only be seen as a negative development.
Regardless of what you may think of Terry the human being, you cannot deny that his assured and committed presence at the heart of the national side’s defense will be sorely missed. Never will the structural integrity of Ledley King’s knees be the subject of so many an English football fan’s prayers.
UPDATE: Chelsea have confirmed that Terry may be fit to play in this weekend’s FA Cup final after scans revealed that he has not suffered a break.
Terry himself told the club’s official website;
“With such an important match coming up the right thing was to put a protective boot on and have a scan. The scan shows there’s no break. I aim to train on Thursday, if not Friday, and of course play in the final.”
