Manchester United 1-2 Chelsea
English Premier League
3 April 2010
Chelsea went top of the table with an entertaining 2-1 win at Old Trafford on Saturday.
The visitors looked much better for most of the match as Manchester United looked flat from the start. Most of the chances and possession were with Chelsea, who would take a 1-0 lead in the first half. Florent Malouda would dribble into the box and send a pass towards goal where Joe Cole back-heeled it into the back of the net.
It was a great play from Cole and fantastic play by Malouda to set up his teammate. United never seemed to match the intensity until late in the second half. Didier Drogba, who didn’t start, would come in the second half and give Chelsea their second goal. He would get behind the defense in the 79th minute and score with a top shelf shot. It was a clinical finish from the striker.
Manchester United would find some life after the Drogba goal as Frederico Macheda would make an immediate impact as a second half substitute. Nani would get a cross into the box from a wide position where it deflected of Macheda and into the back of the net. It was now 2-1 and the crowd at Old Trafford suddenly woke up.
The Red Devils pushed for the equalizer while Chelsea could put the match out of reach with another goal. They would not be able to get the second goal and Chelsea would give a crucial 2-1 win to go top of the table.
