Manchester United have been linked with a move for the Benfica defender Victor Lindelof.
The Swedish international is expected to sign for the Old Trafford outfit this month, but the deal has been held up due to a disagreement between Benfica and Lindelof’s former club Vasteras. Apparently, Vasteras are entitled to a certain percentage of his transfer fee but the Portuguese outfit are unwilling to pay up. However, recent reports claimed that the issue has been sorted now.
Lindelof’s potential defensive partner at Manchester United, Eric Bailly has now commented on the transfer as well. The Ivorian has been quoted by the Swedish media claiming that he hopes to play with the Benfica star. Bailly has claimed that Lindelof is a very good player with great abilities and that he could help Manchester United this season.
He said:
I hope to play with him [Lindelof]. Hopefully he will help us. He is a very good player. He has great qualities and will certainly do it well if he comes to us. We have many good central defenders [like] Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones but I hope I get to play with Lindelof.
Lindelof is expected to cost Manchester United around £38million and according to earlier reports, the Premier League giants have reportedly agreed on a deal with Benfica for the player.
Recently, Zlatan Ibrahimovic also praised Lindelof and claimed that the 22-year-old is ready to play for a big club. Mourinho’s side have struggled at the back this season and the only player who has impressed defensively is Eric Bailly. Considering the fact that Bailly will be away on international duty for the whole of this month, Mourinho’s move for Lindelof makes complete sense.
The Sweden international will add much-needed depth, quality and stability to United’s backline in the absence of Bailly and then alongside him in future.
