Manchester United right-back, Matteo Darmian, has been linked with a move back to Italy for a few months, now.
The 26-year-old Italian international has struggled to hold down a regular first-team place at Manchester United, and the likes of Inter Milan are thought to be willing to provide him with an escape route.
As per the latest reports from SportMediaset, Inter Milan are confident of signing the former Torino defender in January, and the chances of a transfer are very high. Inter believe that Darmian’s lack of playing time at Old Trafford could help them get the defender on loan for the rest of this season. The report also adds that both clubs are in talks regarding the player and a decision could be taken soon.
It is understandable why the Italian outlet believe that a transfer is likely to happen. A player of Darmian’s quality would start for most Serie A sides, and, at this stage of his career, he cannot afford to sit on the bench day-in and day-out. Furthermore, Darmian is a regular starter for the Italian national team and is quite experienced for his age. The 26-year-old has always been a starter for club and country before moving to Manchester United.
However, Darmian’s situation is not quite the same anymore. The Italian has started five matches for Manchester United in the last month, and he has completed 90 minutes in four of those games. It is evident that Mourinho is ready to include Darmian in his plans. Perhaps his hard work and attitude has impressed the Portuguese tactician, and he is ready to give the player another chance.
Whatever the case, a move to Italy seems unlikely at this stage. Despite the reports from SportMediaset, Manchester United are lacking depth in that right-back position and Mourinho will not sanction a sale unless he can get a better player in January.
