Arsenal scout Brian McDermott has revealed Arsene Wenger will not enter into the market unless a top quality player becomes available in January.
In the last summer transfer window, the Gunners decided against signing an outfield player and added only Petr Cech to their squad. The goalkeeper arrived at the Emirates from cross town rivals Chelsea.
Wenger had earlier admitted that he is interested in signing “world-class” players. He had reiterated on numerous occasions his desire to secure the services of only quality players in the past.
Danny Welbeck has not featured this season as an injury forced the former Manchester United forward to spend time on the sidelines. In addition to this, Theo Walcott picked up a calf injury during the Gunners’ 3-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the Capital One Cup.
According to the Guardian, the England international is expected to be on the sidelines until December. The situation leaves Olivier Giroud as the only first choice striker in the squad. McDermott suggests, despite these injuries, Wenger will not bring in a striker, unless a top quality player becomes available.
“The manager won’t spend unless he thinks it’s absolutely necessary,” McDermott told Sky Sports, as reported by the Evening Standard.
“The scouting structure at Arsenal is phenomenal. We all know who the top strikers in the world are. Can you get them to come? They won’t be available in January that’s an absolute certainty.”
If Giroud picks up an injury, it will be a massive blow for Wenger and Arsenal as they look to qualify for the next stages of the Champions League and at the same time try to stay at the top in the league.
The Gunners have to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stage clash at the Allianz Arena in November. They sealed a 2-0 victory over the Bundesliga winners at the Emirates and that was their first win in the European competition this season.
A failure to qualify could see them play in the Europa League, if they finish third in their group. Should that happen, Arsenal will play their European fixtures on Thursday and it could have an impact on their bid to win the Premier League title.
