Arsenal are still interested in Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Gunners, along with Juventus, were linked with the Spanish midfielder in the summer, when it looked like he’d be sold to make way for Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry.
However, Alonso has not only stayed at Anfield, but he’s shown why it was a good idea for Rafa Benitez to hold on to him. Alonso scored the winner in Liverpool’s pivotal win at Chelsea, and he’s been in fine form overall.
That has kept Arsene Wenger smitten, and according to reports, Arsenal had a scout at Ewood Park on Saturday, where Alonso scored in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Blackburn.
If Liverpool are still intent on signing Gareth Barry, that. However, if they weren’t willing to sell him for £14m this summer, his value now can only be higher, with his excellent form this season.
That would seemingly price Arsenal out of a move for him, given their penchant for not spending a great deal of money on one player too often. Liverpool would benefit financially from selling Alonso for at least £15-20m+, but I don’t see Arsenal paying that much for him.
Should Arsenal buck their usual habits and make a big-money move for Alonso? Should Liverpool let him go in favor of Gareth Barry?
