Arsenal have suffered a massive blow after their star midfielder Jack Wilshere as he is set for a lengthy layoff due to leg injury.
The 23-year-old missed the Gunners’ 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield last weekend. Their manager Arsene Wenger confirmed the player picked up an ankle injury during the training on Saturday and will only be out for “days.”
According to The Guardian, the England international has a hair line fracture on his left fibula. It is believed Wilshere picked up an injury after he was tackled by January signing Gabriel Paulista.
The midfielder will undergo scans and the full extent of the injury will be revealed as the results are set to be out on Friday. Based on that, the medical team will decide if he has to undergo a surgery or not. Should he go under the knife, Wilshere is expected to be on the sidelines for three months.
However, if they decide against doing a surgery, Arsenal star will be out of action for six to eight weeks.
England face San Marino and Switzerland in the 2016 European championship qualifiers in September. Roy Hodgson will not be able to call upon Wilshere for the Three Lions’ matches next month.
Last season, Wilshere picked up an ankle injury during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates following a tackle from Paddy McNair in November. That forced him to miss six months of the 2014-15 season, which was during the crucial phase of the campaign.
Wenger has Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey, Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini, who all can play in Wilshere’s position.
