Week in review – we look back at the weekend results and the biggest Premier League transfers.
Both Manchester Clubs Win
Manchester United and Manchester City both won their Premier League fixtures to maintain their battle at the top of the Premier League table.
United produced a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Robin Van Persie and Patrice Evra. The win meant they briefly went ten points clear in the title race before Manchester City’s match at the Emirates against Arsenal.
City secured a comfortable 2-0 win over the Gunners as they were aided by an early red card for Laurent Koscielny. The goals came from James Milner and Edin Dzeko before Vincent Kompany was later sent off for a two footed tackle on Jack Wilshere. The results ensure that both sides remain the favourites for the Premier League title.
Chelsea Complete Ba signing
Chelsea have added the services of Demba Ba to their squad with the Newcastle United man signing in a deal worth around £7 million.
Chelsea bid just enough to activate the buy out clause in Ba’s contract at Newcastle. He becomes the third striker at the club with Fernando Torres and Victor Moses his competition for places at Stamford Bridge.
“They are both big clubs with a strong history, but Chelsea is Chelsea and you cannot compare. It will be easier with world-class players around, who make the football look so easy,” Ba told the Daily Telegraph.
Newcastle United Agree Remy Fee
Newcastle United have agreed a fee of around £8 million with Marseille for striker Loic Remy.
Newcastle had been linked with a move for the Frenchman for a number of weeks with great debate over whether a deal would be finalised. Remy flew into Newcastle over the weekend to conduct talks over personal terms and to undergo a medical.
“Good luck to Loic in Newcastle. Don’t worry, I’ve told him what to expect. Great guy. Perfect club for him,” said former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton, currently on loan at Marseille from QPR.
Manchester City may Appeal Kompany Red Card
Manchester City may appeal the red card shown to captain Vincent Kompany during the Premier League clash with Arsenal.
Referee Mike Dean showed the defender a straight red card after what appeared to be a two footed tackle on Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere. Kompany defended himself after the game hinting that the club may decide to appeal the decision and get it downgraded or overturned.
“We will do an appeal and I think we can win, because it’s easy, it is correct – He went into the tackle with one foot in front and the other behind,” Mancini told BBC Sport.
