In the world of transfer news and rumors, rule #1 is (or at least it should be) not to believe everything that you read. If you did, you’d have your own remake of The Exorcist.
Even if it’s not believable, it’s always fun to read, and we’ve got plenty of transfer speculation for you to mull over as you start your Friday.
Barcelona Interested in Arsenal’s Van Persie?
Not too much time goes by without an Arsenal player being linked with another club, and it’s Robin Van Persie in the gossip pages again, with Barcelona eyeing him as a replacement for Thierry Henry, who may be on his way back to England.
Analysis: I don’t see Arsenal selling Van Persie, but it would be something to see Henry make a return to the club. He’s not the same Henry that he was just a few years ago, but he can still bag goals regularly.
Real and Barca Linked with Aguero
Spanish news sources are always good for a spectacular, outlandish rumor or two, whether it’s Cristiano Ronaldo (I’m sure some teams would buy a virus if it could score goals), Sergio Aguero (step right up, Sergio!), or probably you or me, if we had any soccer skills.
Analysis: It wouldn’t make a lot of sense for Atletico to sell him, would it? Money’s nice, but so is having a guy like Aguero to build some long-term success around.
Torres Not Going Anywhere
In case anyone needed any further confirmation, Fernando Torres’ agent has said that his client won’t be leaving Anfield in January, to Manchester City or anyone else.
Analysis: Yeah, not going to happen, unless City want to part with at least £75-100m.
Liverpool Eye Lennon-Pennant Swap Deal?
Liverpool aren’t short on wingers, but they could be upgrading at the position in January, as sippin’ whiskey aficionado Jermaine Pennant could leave for Tottenham, with Aaron Lennon going the other way.
Analysis: Pennant could rejuvenate his once-promising career at Tottenham, but Spurs might get more value out of that £7m than him.
Arsenal Want Juventus Defender Chiellini
Arsenal could be looking to beef up their defense in January, and one of the players on Arsene Wenger’s wishlist is Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini.
Analysis: Chiellini’s a quality defender, but with Juventus having aspirations of their own in the new year, I don’t see them letting him go in January.
Diarra’s Sale the Start of Mass Exodus at Pompey?
Could Lassana Diarra be just the first top Portsmouth player to be sacrificed for the sake of he club’s financial future? According to one Portsmouth player, who probably shouldn’t be doing much talking when it comes to the future, that is the case.
Analysis: Portsmouth might need to cut some of the fat (like Lauren), and at least one other key player may have to be sold, but it won’t be an exodus of apocalyptic proportions.
Middlesbrough’s O’Neil to Replace Diarra?
Lassana Diarra is not yet on his way to Real Madrid, but Portsmouth are already preparing for life without him, turning to an old player to fill a new hole.
Analysis: Considering that the kind of money they’re about to receive could really burn a hole in their pockets, spending as little as possible on his replacement is a good way to use that money wisely.
