Manchester United and Chelsea are set to make a bizarre bid as the two English clubs are likely to enter into a summer battle in signing Manchester City superstar Yaya Toure in the summer transfer window.
The Ivory Coast international played a crucial role in helping the Citizens win their second Premier League title last season. Just two days after the final game of the season on May 13 was Toure’s birthday and the midfielder claims City failed to wish him on his birthday.
Toure’s agent has already admitted the 30-year-old will consider his future at the Etihad, which was later confirmed by the player on Twitter. His unhappiness at City further continued after the club did not allow to visit his dying brother.
He lost his younger brother, who tragically died of cancer in June and the former Barcelona midfielder has hit out at his employers for not letting him visit his brother. Considering his recent set of events, it looks like Toure will leave City this summer.
According to French newspaper Le Parisien, United and Chelsea, along with Paris Saint-Germain are interested in securing a deal for the unhappy City star. The report says Toure has decided not to put City short on his body and is keen on leaving Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
An unnamed Ivory Coast teammate of Toure has confirmed the player will do everything possible to leave City in the ongoing transfer window.
“He has accumulated too many grudges against [Manchester City’s] leaders and he will not stay with them. He will do everything to ensure his departure this summer,” unnamed player was quoted as saying in the Manchester Evenings News.
With his agent’s comments from May, followed by his reaction on Twitter and recent statements on criticising City, it looks like Toure is all but set to leave the Etihad club.
United are in the market for a complete midfielder and the addition of Toure will only bolster their midfield. Chelsea have enough midfielder’s in the squad and still be in a position to accommodate a player of Toure’s calibre.
Selling Toure to either to United or Chelsea will be a big mistake and with the financial backing City have, they can afford to keep the unhappy midfielder at the club and force him to spend most part of the next season on the bench.
Should City decide to sell Toure, they will do everything possible in order to stop him from joining their direct league rivals. Despite Le Parisien’s claims that United and Chelsea are interested, it is likely to be PSG as the firm favourites in signing the African midfielder.
