Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink has confirmed his desire to bring Didier Drogba back to Stamford Bridge soon.
The former Chelsea striker still has a year left on his Montreal Impact contract and has been a huge hit for the MLS outfit. The Ivorian has scored 11 goals in 11 games so far.
Drogba has been linked with a return to Chelsea in a coaching capacity. The Chelsea fan favourite is expected to be a crucial part of Hiddink’s backroom staff.
Earlier it was reported that Chelsea have initiated talks and an official announcement is soon.
Guus Hiddink has now confirmed the story to London Evening Standard.
“I’d be happy to have him here,” Hiddink said. “At the moment he is still attached to his contract in Canada. But it is intended that he’s involved.”
It will be interesting to see if Chelsea can convince Montreal to part with their prized asset midway through his contract, especially when he has been in such scintillating form.
Furthermore, coaching might be an option too soon for the 37 year old who is still performing at a very high level in the MLS.
However, there is no doubt that bringing someone like him back to the club would help calm things on and off the pitch. There has been a major disconnect between the club and the fans following the sacking of Mourinho and someone like Drogba could help bridge that gap.
Furthermore, Drogba has won almost every trophy with Chelsea including the Premier League and his experience could be vital to reviving and motivating the Chelsea squad at the moment.
