As per the latest transfer rumours, Chelsea have apparently identified two defensive targets – Pepe and Alessio Romagnoli. Antonio Conte is reportedly open to spending big on centre-backs once again.

Chelsea sealed a big money move for David Luiz during the summer transfer window, but the Blues are not satisfied with their defensive options. Antonio Conte’s side have struggled defensively so far this season and the media linking them with a defender is no real surprise.

During the summer window, Conte submitted a 30 million pounds bid for Romagnoli and as per Guardian‘s latest transfer column, the Blues will be back in for him. Chelsea’s offer in the summer was confirmed by Sky Sports.

Romagnoli is one of most talented young defenders in Europe right now and it is no surprise that Conte wants to sign him for Chelsea. Recent rumours claim that Conte has decided to improve on the offer Chelsea made during the summer window and pay around 49 million pounds now.

Furthermore, Real Madrid defender Pepe has also been linked with the Blues. Apparently, Chelsea will try to sign him on a free next summer. The Portuguese international’s current deal expires at the end of this season. Los Blancos are willing to offer him a one-year extension, but the player is holding out for two. A reasonable offer could definitely force Real Madrid to sell in the summer.

Pepe would be a masterstroke from Conte, despite the Real Madrid star’s conduct issues. The Portuguese defender is experienced and would add much-needed quality to the Chelsea back four. Pepe’s quality is beyond doubt.

Chelsea were beaten comfortably by the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool this season, mainly due to their mediocre defending. Adding two players of Pepe and Romagnoli’s calibre would definitely save their season. The Blues will need to improve quickly if they want to win the title this season.
