Spanish newspaper Marca dropped a bombshell on Saturday when they claimed Real Madrid had agreed a personal deal with Manchester United goal keeper David de Gea. It is however far from a ‘done deal’ scenario, as Los Blancos have yet to agree a deal with Manchester United.
The focus in Spain now shifts back to Iker Casillas. The 33-year-old has been a one-club player throughout his life, however, his performances have dipped in recent years and he is now facing an uncertain future at the club.
Madrid will try their best to lure De Gea, who has a contract with United till 2016 and has yet to sign a new deal at the club, and should they manage to sign the Spanish international, it could force Casillas out of the Bernabeu.
It is indeed a complicated situation. Despite the obvious emotional attachment, many feel Casillas is not that same player anymore and that a new goal keeper is required to take the club forward. To put it simply, Madrid hierarchy believe the fairytale journey between Casillas and the club cannot go on forever.
Casillas has always expressed his desire to continue at Madrid, but even he knows the situation is more complicated than ever before. He will lose the starting place once De Gea arrives at the club.
Spanish paper El Confidential, who have good contacts within Madrid, claim that Arsenal could be an attractive destination for the Madrid legend, but the problem is Arsene Wenger does not fancy him anymore. Casillas was linked Arsenal in the past, and although the Gunners need a world class goal keeper in the summer, the Real Madrid is not their prime target any more.
If the reports are to believed Arsenal are rather interested in signing Chelsea goal keeper Petr Cech in the summer.
