SEBASTOPOL is my idea of the Grand Annual winner at this season’s Cheltenham festival as he looks the type to improve over fences when given a big field/strong pace scenario. This consistent sort keeps finding one too good and was filling the runner-up spot for the seventh time in a row when 25-1 for a Grade 2 novices’ chase at Kempton last time. His patient running style is far from ideal for Kempton and he could be vulnerable again despite heading the Spreadex fixed odds betting at 5-4. I’d much rather side with his two opponents in this 2m2f contest, especially 5-2 outside ROCKSTAR RONNIE, who made all over trip and rack last time. Options for taking on the favourite include selling him in the 50-25-10 market with Spreadex, ‘dutching’ his opponents ATHOLL STREET and Rockstar Ronnie in the fixed odds market or just backing the last-named,

BRIAN HUGHES has a good book of rides at Ayr today, including RAMBLE WEST who bolted up 21 lengths at Musselburgh on her recent Rules debut. Runner-up in two point-to-points, the switch to hurdles should pose no problems in the 12.30. DREAMS OF HOME lost his 100% record when only seventh in a 2m4f novices’ handicap at Carlisle on his Rules chase debut late last month but probably paid for helping to force a strong pace over a trip that stretches him. The drop back to this extended two miles looks ideal for him and he could take some pegging back in the 2.10 race. Spreadex have already awarded Hughes 10pts for non-runner HEARTBREAK KID (3.15) and he’s not without hope of picking up a minor placing courtesy of COUNTERMAND (1.00) or RAINY CITY (2.45).
