Arsenal skipper Thomas Vermaelen has agreed a deal in principle to join Manchester United in the summer, according to exclusive report from The Telegraph.
Manchester United now need to agree a fee with the Gunners after the World Cup, but the Belgian hopes to complete his move and is preparing to leave the London club.
The 28-year-old, got off to a brilliant start at Arsenal following his signing from Ajax, but has struggled in the last couple of seasons through injuries and loss of form and dropped down the pecking orders at the club behind Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.
United manager Louis van Gaal wants to bolster his defence, following the departures of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, and will be hoping the Belgian to rediscover his old form again.
The 28-year-old, who has been at the club for five years, has one year left on his contract, would be available for £10m and will earn around £100,000-a-week at Old Trafford.
Vermaelen will become the second Arsenal skipper to join Manchester United in recent years, after Robin van Persie joined the Old Trafford club two seasons ago. The Belgian defender shares the same agent as Van Persie and that is understood to have played the key role in this transfer.
Although Vermaelen is not a first choice starter anymore but selling a good player to your rivals will only ignite the fans’ wrath. Should Arsenal sell Vermaelen to Manchester United? Have your say below…
