Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta has stressed the importance of winning a trophy this season, saying it would represent a big turning point for the Gunners.
The North London side are without a trophy since 2005, but they have the best chance to end that drought this season. They are still alive in the FA Cup and are favourites to win it after being drawn against Championship club Wigan Athletic in the semi-finals.
“I think it would be a turning point for the club because for such a long time we haven’t won anything,” Arteta said as quoted by The Times.
“It gives you a lift, gives you belief that you can start to go in the right direction, and hopefully we can do it.
“We have a great chance, but there’s still a month to go and some really tough games coming up. That’s why it’s important to get some momentum for that moment, and get there with the belief and in good form.”
Despite being knocked out of the Champions League, Arteta believes they can take great pride from the performance against Bayern Munich, and is remains optimistic over Arsenal’s title chances. The Gunners are seven points behind league leaders Chelsea, but have a game in hand.
Meanwhile, Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is confident that manager David Moyes will be a huge success at Old Trafford after a difficult first season.
Speaking at a promotional event for ‘Warrior’ in Glasgow, Fellaini said, as quoted by The Times:
“It is difficult for every manager, I think, in the first year. However, United have had 26 years with just the same manager, so the change is not easy for the supporters, for everybody. But give him time and I think he [Moyes] will be great for the club.”
“I could never say something bad about him [Moyes] because he has done everything for me. He is like a father. When I arrived at Everton I learnt a lot from him and I want to repay him.”
Manchester United face Liverpool on Sunday, and Fellaini is looking forward to the occasion,
“We won our last game 3-0 against West Brom and played well. We are more confident now. On Sunday, we are playing against Liverpool, one of the biggest teams in England, but we have a good team as well.”
