Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is willing to pay more than £20m to sign French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, who is also a reported target of cross town rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
The 25-year-old wanted to move elsewhere in the summer, but was forced to stay on. The French midfielder is having yet another outstanding campaign, putting Southampton in a strong position to command high transfer value for him.
Tottenham have had a £12m bid rejected last summer, but Spurs are expected to come back for him with a higher bid, but Matt Hughes of The Times claims, the situation will get complicated with Arsenal likely to enter the bidding race as well.
[polldaddy poll=8566107]Jeremy Wilson of The Telegraph writes that it would be virtually impossible for any top clubs to prise the midfielder away from St Mary’s this month, but clubs are likely to make a move for him in summer.
Tottenham never improved on their opening bid and their relationship with Southampton has also become strained following the departure of Muricio Pochettino and his coaching staff.
Arsenal have signed Calum Chambers from Southampton in the summer but they made no enquiry for Schneiderlain so far. Although Wenger feels, he has enough midfield depth at this moment, but with Flamini getting out of contract and Arteta only agreeing a one year extension, it’s highly likely the Gunners would sign a top defensive midfielder.
The Gunners have been linked with St Etienne’s skipper Loic Perrin, who has confirmed that the North Londoners had made an approach to him, but recent reports suggest Arsenal probably won’t be making a move for him in January. Wenger is happy to wait till summer to land a top target rather than going for a short term target.
