Arsenal are preparing an offer for 21-year-old Swiss centre-back Martin Hinteregger, according to The Metro.
Hinteregger, who plays for Red Bull Salzburg, is thought be a potential replacement of Johan Djourou – the forgotten Arsenal centre-back – who has been linked with a move to Premier League outfit Hull City.
Djourou is currently plying his trade in the Bundesliga with Hamburg and is free to leave the Emirates Stadium next summer. Hull City boss Steven Bruce is showing an interest in him and could make a £2.6m summer bid for the Swiss international.
Arsenal may also struggle to hold on to skipper Thomas Vermaelen, who has struggled to hold down a regular place in the side and has been constantly linked with moves to Italy. Should he depart in the summer, the Gunners will need extra cover, and Hinteregger could be just that, although Arsenal may face competition from both Manchester United and Liverpool.
Red Bull Salzburg are demanding a fee in the region of £8m for the defender, who confirmed in September that Manchester United are showing an interest in him.
Manchester United are likely to spend heavily on a central defender with skipper Nemanja Vidic set to leave the club next summer. Liverpool could also be looking to shake things up and mend holes in their leaky defence by adding a few new faces.
