Arsenal have been in excellent form in recent months and the Gunners are aiming for the second place in the Premier League. Also, they have a good chance of retaining the FA Cup. Should everything fall in place, it will be considered an excellent season, one that has exceeded all expectations.
Arsene Wenger has already started focusing on the next season. The Frenchman feels his side will be up for challenges next season from the start.
“What will be interesting, let’s get a new start and see where we stand next year. We feel we have made up some ground, – that will be the challenge of next season from the start; let’s show we are there and capable to fight for it,” said Wenger.
Therefore, the summer is crucial for Arsenal as Wenger plans to build his team for next season. However, he doesn’t feel the need for wholesale changes, but admits he needs to get rid of few players to add necessary balance to the squad.
Lukas Podolski, Joel Campbell and Yaya Sanogo haven’t really impressed during their loan spells and could be offloaded in the summer.
He added: “We are not in need of absolute change. We have a strong squad. We have some strong young players behind. We have a very big squad, so we need to lose some players as well. We have Lukas Podolski away, Joel Campbell. Yaya Sanogo will come back.”
Sky Sports pundit Thierry Henry recently said the Gunners are four big players away from the required quality, after Arsenal drew 0-0 with Chelsea at the Emirates. He also criticised French striker Olivier Giroud saying Arsenal won’t win title with him.
He said: “I think Giroud is doing extremely well. But can you win the league with him? I wouldn’t think so.
“He does a job, and he does it ever so well, but you can’t win the league.”
Wenger has responded to Henry’s criticisms by saying the former Barcelona player has been wrong in his assessment.
“He’s paid for that. We know all the system now of the modern media, especially on TV. I know how it works. They push you to be controversial because they give you a lot of money.
“I can accept an opinion but the comment on Giroud was a bit more wrong, especially because I heard the same thing being said about Nicolas Anelka, about Thierry Henry himself and about Robin van Persie. And they all became world-class players themselves.”
Arsenal will play Hull City on Monday night where a victory for the Gunners will take them to second in the Premier League table.
