Arsene Wenger has admitted for the first time this season that it will be difficult for the Gunners to catch Chelsea in the Premier League.

Following the Gunners’ 1-0 defeat at the hands of Stoke City at the Britannia on Saturday, Wenger branded it as a ‘major setback’, and with only 10 games left to play, the Frenchman understands the task ahead for his side.

The Gunners are just four points behind Chelsea at the moment but have dropped to third in the Premier League, with Liverpool moving into the second spot on goal difference.

Wenger refused to go into real detail, but when asked how difficult will it be to close the gap with their London rivals, he said as quoted by Sky Sports:

“We cannot say it’s easy. It is difficult, but I expected them to win at Fulham.”

However Wenger has hit back at the claims that Arsenal’s form generally dip towards the end of the season, claiming that is simply wrong.

Wenger added: “I would say look at our results at the crucial point in the season and you would be surprised.

“Somebody says something that is not checked and everyone repeats it and it becomes an opinion, even if the facts don’t show it.

“Our end of season has always been very strong.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is confident that the Gunners can drag themselves back into the title race this month. The England international is hopeful that the Gunners can make up the lost ground when they face Manchester City and Chelsea in the next four weeks.
