When footballers are linked with other clubs, usually the transfer can be put to bed when said player reaffirms his desire to remain at the club.

However, Wayne Rooney’s situation is a little different as his former manager at Manchester United, Sir Alex Ferguson, was the one to reveal the England international had made a verbal request to leave the Premier League side – citing an unhappiness at being benched in a number of games.

As far as the media are concerned, Wayne Rooney wants to leave Manchester United. The only problem is there is only one side who have made an official interest – Manchester United’s title-rivals Chelsea, managed by Jose Mourinho.

It’s very unlikely he will leave to join a side in the same division, so it’s expected Rooney will remain with the Lancashire outfit this coming season.

Manchester United have stated all through this summer how the 27-year old is not for sale at any price. The interesting part is how Rooney has remained tight-lipped about his future since the transfer request was announced. Comments have been made from spokespeople and his agent, but the forward hasn’t publicly addressed the ongoing rumours head on.

That would suggest he doesn’t want to commit his future to the Premier League side and scare of potential suitors. Rooney will know the chances of him now moving are incredibly slim, but relations within the side are the issue which have yet to be resolved.

His falling out with former manager Ferguson hasn’t been patched up, and the long-serving boss is still at the club as a director. It’s conjecture to say Rooney won’t want to stay at the club with the 71-year old still at the side, but it’s a fair assessment of the former Everton man’s mindset.

Rooney may be forced to be an unhappy United player this season, as a move does not appear on the cards. He has been training with the reserves this summer, and has already been ruled out of the side’s Community Shield match.
