Louis van Gaal has confirmed Manchester United will make two more signings in the summer transfer window in order to become genuine title contenders.
The Premier League giants allowed their record signing Angel Di Maria leave Old Trafford after a year. The Argentine international, who arrive from Real Madrid last summer has completed a switch to Paris Saint-Germain.
In addition to this, goalkeeper David de Gea’s future at United remains uncertain. The Spain international has one year left on his contract and has been heavily linked with a move to Real.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager hinted United could sign a goalkeeper if De Gea leaves Old Trafford in the ongoing summer transfer window. He also hinted that Red Devils may bring in a winger to replace the former Benfica star.
“I think Manchester United have to always be a challenger or champion. Yes, because I have said that we need players with speed and creativity – Di Maria is a player like that and now he is gone, so we need that type of player,” Van Gaal told MUTV.
“Of course we have problems still with the goalkeeper, so we need maybe two more players.”
United are believed to closing in on completing a deal with Barcelona for their star forward Pedro. Should they sign him, he could take place of Di Maria in the squad. Their priority should be signing a striker this summer.
After allowing Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao leave, with the latter’s loan deal expired at the end of the season, Van Gaal is left with Wayne Rooney as the only recognised goal scoring striker in the squad.
Bringing in a world class striker should also be United’s priority in the ongoing summer transfer window.
