Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has claimed that Manchester United need to appoint the former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho if they want to get back to the top of English football.

“I admire Jose Mourinho a lot,” Henry told Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias.

“He is one of the best coaches in history, he has won almost everything and for clubs that no one was expecting, such as at Porto and Inter Milan.”

“Then, he still won the Spanish league with Real Madrid facing one of Barcelona’s best teams ever.”

Henry added: “Manchester United need to get back to the big wins and for that they must have a coach with a winning profile.”

“No one can question anything that Van Gaal has done for football, but his message is not going into the group.”

“Jose Mourinho is fantastic and can be an excellent solution for the club, he is synonymous with victory, although things did not go very well at Chelsea earlier this season.”

The Portuguese manager has been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, but there haven’t been any official announcements yet. There have been rumours that a verbal agreement is in place for Mourinho to take over from Van Gaal.

The Dutch manager has failed to impress during his time at Old Trafford, despite spending huge sums of money and will walk at the end of this season.

Jose Mourinho is one of the best managers in world football and perhaps second only to Pep Guardiola. If Manchester United can pull it off, it would be an exceptional addition.

Previously, club legend Sir Alex Ferguson also wanted Mourinho to replace him at Old Trafford.

Mourinho won the Premier League title with Chelsea last season and was sacked this season after a poor start.
