Many major sporting events take place in April as we head towards summer. Most of the domestic football action is heading towards its close whilst the Formula One and Indian Premier League seasons are just starting.
Here’s a look at some of the major sporting events to watch this April:
Champions League
The 2020-21 UEFA Champions League is at the quarter-final stage, and each of the legs from the four ties will take place in April, as well as the first leg of the semi-finals.
Defending champions Bayern Munich drew Paris Saint-Germain in a repeat of last year’s final in what will be the most-anticipated ties of the next round.
Football fans worldwide may be just as excited to watch Manchester City versus Borussia Dortmund as two great attacks go head-to-head.
Real Madrid, Liverpool, Chelsea and Porto make up the draw as each team looks to get their hands on the trophy this season. Fans will want to make sure they have a VPN to watch sport streams with each of these ties set to take place en route to May’s final.
Grand National
Saturday, April 10, will see the 173rd annual Grand National take place from Aintree Racecourse. Fans will be more excited than usual for this year’s event after the 2020 edition was cancelled.
Tiger Roll is the back-to-back defending champion but has yet to be declared for this year’s race. In all, 40 horses will compete in a handicap steeplechase over 4 miles and 2 furlongs, jumping 30 fences over the two laps.
Formula One
The second race of the 2021 Formula One season will take place from Imola as Lewis Hamilton bids for a record eighth title. The Brit won the season opener in Bahrain in March but isn’t expected to be as dominant in this campaign as the last one.
Max Verstappen and Sebastien Vettel are expected to compete with Hamilton, who has won the Drivers Championship for each of the past four seasons.
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Italy only returned to the Formula One calendar last year, having previously hosted the Italian Grand Prix in 1980 and San Marino between 1980-2006.
Last season it replaced the Chinese Grand Prix and could be here to stay for the foreseeable future. The Monza event is also on the calendar, scheduled for September 12 this year.
Golf Masters
From cars that zoom around a circuit at over 200mph to a much slower sport. One of golf’s majors takes place from the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, over the second weekend of April as the Masters Tournament gets underway.
The Augusta Masters is the first of four golf majors throughout the year and is unique to the others in that it is the only one held at the same venue each year.
The 85th edition of the tournament is scheduled for April 8-11, with Dustin Johnson the defending champion.
World Snooker Championship
Professional snooker’s longest-running and most prestigious tournament takes place between April 17 – May 3 this year. The total prize money of £2,395,000, including £500,000 for the winner, makes it the wealthiest tournament in the sport.
12 months ago, Ronnie O’Sullivan won the tournament for the sixth time, putting him just one behind Stephen Hendry, the most successful participant in the modern era.
The Rocket is only behind Judd Trump in the current World Snooker Tour rankings, so you can expect both to head into the tournament among the favourites.
Yan Bingtao should not be overlooked after winning the Masters back in January.
