Manchester United have reportedly opened talks with Sporting Lisbon over their midfield destroyer William Carvalho, who is also a reported target of Chelsea and Arsenal.
Back in October last year, Portuguese newspaper, ‘Record‘ revealed that Manchester United had been continuously monitoring the player. He was watched by United scouts even when he was on loan at Belgian side, Cercle Brugge.
Now, the Daily Mail has revealed that Manchester United have opened talks Sporting and want to conclude the business before the summer World Cup.
The report says the Red Devils are willing to pay around £29m, and considering Sporting’s precarious financial situation, Moyes could get his man.
The 21-year-old has superb defensive qualities, while his reading of the game is exemplary.
Several European heavyweights have been monitoring the midfielder’s progress these last few months, and back in November, reports emerged in ‘A Bola’ that Chelsea had joined the race to sign the Sporting man, who is contracted until 2018 and has a formidable release clause of €45m.
However, after Chelsea signed Nemanja Matic in the January transfer window from Benfica, it became quite clear that the Blues would no longer invest on yet another defensive midfielder.
In December, ‘A Bola’ claimed that Arsenal were also interested in the midfielder, with scout Francis Cagigal, having watched him many times, being very much impressed with Carvalho’s performance.
Earlier this month, after Sporting’s 2-1 win over Braga, Carvalho, when asked about his future, said:
“It could be Manchester United or Real Madrid. It’s just nice to have a great European club after me, but at the moment I’m just totally focused on Sporting and doing my best until the end of the season.”
What do you think? Could William Carvalho be at Old Trafford next season?
