Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has made a sensational claim that Van Gaal can win the Champions League if he can land the Barcelona forward, Pedro.
Pedro has been linked with a move to Manchester United all summer and is certain to leave Barcelona before the window shuts.
The Spanish international has also been courted by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.
Pedro is frustrated with the lack of game time at Camp Nou and has informed his teammates of his desire to leave for more minutes. Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has also confirmed that Pedro wants to leave and there is nothing the club can do about it.
Both Manchester United and Chelsea are willing to match Barcelona’s valuation of the player. But it appears Chelsea are keen to pay all of it upfront, which makes them a possible destination.
However, Van Gaal has promised Pedro a prominent role in the squad and Woodward travelled to Spain this week to finalise the move.
Speaking about Manchester United’s chances in the Champions League, Paul Scholes told BT Sport :
“I think they potentially could win it, if they can add someone with a bit of pace like Pedro up front.
“Manchester United are a big club and we’ve had some great nights. When you’re playing against the big clubs this crowd can get you through it.
“If there are any teams out of this qualifying phase who can win it I think United are the ones.”
It will certainly be interesting to see how United shape up, once Pedro is signed. But there is little doubt that Van Gaal has the players and know-how to win an elite competition like the Champions League.
