Everton are yet to appoint a long term successor for Carlo Ancelotti and have been linked with a move for former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.
According to Daily Mail, the Spaniard is a serious contender to take over at Goodison Park, with club owner Farhad Moshiri increasingly keen on the 61-year-old.
There is no doubt that Benitez is a top-class manager who has proven his pedigree across multiple leagues, and he would be a superb replacement for Ancelotti.
However, his allegiance with Liverpool could make any move complicated, with the fans unlikely to welcome his appointment.
Despite this, the move makes perfect sense. He has done well in the Premier League with Liverpool and Newcastle United and could transform Everton next year.
The Toffees need to appoint someone who will be committed to the cause and not use them as a platform for a better job in future.
Benitez is well settled in Merseyside and is currently without a job. He would be a sensible appointment for the Toffees.
The Premier League club have also held talks with the representatives of Nuno Espirito Santo, but they have not been able to agree a financial package with him and his coaching entourage.
Some Everton fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the potential arrival of Benitez – here is what they had to say.
No.
He will never be 100% committed to making Everton successful at the expense of Big Red— retro-blue-colly (@CollyRetro) June 9, 2021
Would be the end for a lot of blues. Remember " little club". Definitely a no for obvious reasons.
