On loan Chelsea striker Radamel Falcao says he might return to French club Monaco this summer, despite interest from his former club River Plate.
Falcao made a name for himself as one of the finest strikers in Europe during his spells at Porto and Atletico Madrid. After enjoying two wonderful seasons with the Rojiblancos, he joined Monaco for an eye-catching fee of €60m in July 2013.
The Colombian striker made a solid start to his career in France, but an unfortunate ACL injury in January 2014 had forced him out for the rest of 2013-14 season. Not only did he miss the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but he never regained his old form again following that injury.
On the final day of the summer transfer window in 2014, Manchester United made a shock move by signing Falcao on loan for £6m, with an option to sign permanently for £43.5m.
Falcao struggled badly at United managing only four goals in 29 games for the Red Devils in all competitions.
While United didn’t consider the option of signing him permanently, then Premier League champions Chelsea took a big gamble on him by signing the Colombian striker on loan. Falcao disappointed again.
The 30-year-old managed just one Premier League game during an injury-hit season for the Blues. Monaco wanted to cut short the loan deal so that he could play in the second half of the season in France, but another injury setback meant he stayed on in London.
Falcao has confirmed this week in a recent interview with Argentine TV channel TyC Sports that Monaco want him back, while also adding River Plate wanted to sign him in the January transfer window.
“In February, Chelsea told me that I was not going to be counted on as I will not be staying there for the coming seasons. At that stage, when they tried again, it was already too late to return to River.”
“You must understand that when a club like Monaco makes a big investment as they did with me, they want a certain return on that investment,” he said.
“At the moment they want me back at the club, for me to play there, they want me for next season, so I see the chance of returning to River as being difficult, as I still have two years of my contract left. At the moment, Monaco’s plan is for me to spend next season with them.”
Falcao has received offers from clubs in Brazil, China and Mexico but it looks like he is targeting a swift return to his former club Monaco this summer.
