FC Basel midfielder Mohamed Elneny is edging closer to joining Arsenal in the January transfer window.
The Gunners have already agreed a £5m deal to sign the midfielder. Elneny will now undergo a medical in the next few days and thereafter the deal will be announced once the transfer window opens in January.
According to reports from The Mirror, talks between the two clubs are now at an advanced level. Elneny was allowed to fly home for Christmas but the Egyptian midfielder is expected to travel to London shortly to complete his move to Arsenal.
The Gunners are lacking depth in the central midfield department, with several key first team players – Jack Wilshere, Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta, and Thomas Rosicky – are currently out injured. Elneny can be a good squad option but he has the potential to become an asset to the squad in the long term.
The midfield trio of Flamini, Arteta and Rosicky could all leave next summer, although the Spaniard is likely to be offered a coaching role within the club.
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Victor Wanyama, but Southampton do not want to sell him in January and are expected to demand in excess of £20m which may put Arsenal off.
