Roma striker Mattia Destro has said that he is pleased and flattered by the interest shown in him by Premier League clubs. Arsenal and Chelsea are in the market to sign the young Italian, and the 23 year-old has said that he was happy that his efforts and performances at his current club are being recognised.
“I heard about the interest from Arsenal,” he said on Radio Roma. “It’s always nice to see such clubs interested in you because that means I’m on the right track and that my work pays. However, I still have so many things to improve and I think I still have work to show what I’m really capable.”
After staying on at the Stadio Olimpico in the summer despite being heavily linked to a move away, Destro has found himself on the bench more often than not this season. Francesco Totti’s staggering form, extremely surprising at the age of 38, has kept the talented youngster out of the side.
Destro has said that he will take a call regarding the situation at the end of this season. He is currently third-choice in Rudi Garcia’s side behind Totti and Gervinho. The former Siena man though, was unwilling to be critical of his manager’s selection.
“The coach made his assessments, I will do mine at the end of the season,” he said.
“I can only speak on the ground. Some speak with their voices, I’m talking on the field. I try to score goals when I have the opportunity. The coach should give me more opportunities? It depends on him. ”
Arsenal are on the lookout for a striker after struggling to find a proven goalscorer up front in the summer. Danny Welbeck hasn’t delivered as expected since arriving from Manchester United, while Olivier Giroud’s injury has kept him out for a large part of the season. With news of a possible departure for Lukas Podolski in the summer, another striker is well and truly required at the Emirates.
